Work Differently. Move Forward. book cover by Arran Smith

A quick introduction from me

Neurodiversity has been part of my life at school, at work and while building businesses. I’ve had to understand my difficulties, learn what my strengths can do, and find different ways forward.

I’ve put those experiences into this book because I want to help you begin that same process in a way that suits you.

DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

A different way to look at what is holding you back

You might recognise just one of these experiences, or several. The book starts with understanding, not making assumptions about what you should change.

01 · UNDERSTANDING

“I know I think differently, but I can't always explain why things feel difficult.”

Explore your personal differences and the situations that create barriers.

02 · STRENGTHS

“I spend so much time thinking about difficulties that I forget what I'm good at.”

Recognise your strengths and what already works for you.

03 · OVERWHELM

“I feel stuck or overwhelmed, and I don't know where to begin.”

Choose one meaningful barrier and break it into manageable steps.

04 · STRATEGIES

“I've tried the usual advice, but it doesn't always work for me.”

Find tools, adjustments and approaches that fit your life.

WHAT YOU WILL FIND INSIDE

This is more than information. It is something you can use.

The book follows a simple framework that helps you stop trying to change everything at once. Every chapter gives you space to understand a situation, question assumptions, explore possibilities and take a practical step.

You can work through it by reading, listening, dictating, drawing or reflecting. There is no right way to complete it.

Understand

What have I understood about myself and my situation?.

Challenge

Do I agree with that understanding? What could I question

Explore

Which different strategies, people or tools could help?

Act

What is one realistic thing I can do, decide or ask for next?

What you can work through

A PERSONAL NOTE

I'm Arran Smith.

I was diagnosed with severe dyslexia when I was nine. Across school, employment and building my own businesses, I have had to find different ways of thinking, communicating and working.

I’ve learnt that understanding your difficulties is only one part of the picture. Recognising strengths, asking different questions and making use of technology and support can change what feels possible.

This book is my way of sharing some of that experience with you. Not as a fixed answer, but as a starting point.
